Jan de la Querra

Jan has been farming with bees full time on the West Coast since 1998. His son, Herman, joined him in 2004 and subsequently they formed their JAN-A-BY partnership. They are assisted by six full time and three seasonal workers which add economic value to the Hopefield community.

This proud team farms in the beautiful surrounding fynbos area with approximately 1600 hives. Hopefield is commonly known for extreme heat that reaches temperatures up to 45 ◦C.

The highly flammable fields have caused its fair share of anxiety and losses, but together they fight the elements, time and time again.

The love for bees is the drive behind the long working hours. Jan and his team are and will always be bee farmers - almost as if they have honey flowing through their veins.
